Sakleshpur

Sakleshpur: Rainforest Coffee of the Western Ghats

Sakleshpur, in Karnataka’s Hassan district, lies in the lush Western Ghats between Chikmagalur and Coorg. With heavy monsoon rainfall, forested hills and rich laterite soils, the region has become one of South India’s important coffee-growing landscapes.

How coffee spread to Sakleshpur

After coffee was first planted in nearby Bababudangiri and Chikmagalur, cultivation gradually expanded across the Western Ghats during the 19th century. British planters recognised that the hills around Sakleshpur shared the same cool climate and fertile soils that had made neighbouring districts successful coffee regions.

By the late 1800s and early 1900s, estates were established throughout the area, forming part of the broader Karnataka coffee belt that still produces a large share of India’s coffee today.

Landscape, shade and spice

Sakleshpur coffee is typically grown under dense shade trees in landscapes that often resemble rainforest gardens more than conventional plantations. A multilayer canopy protects the coffee plants and helps maintain soil health in the region’s high rainfall conditions.

Typical shade trees and intercrops include:

  • Silver oak
  • Jackfruit and other native forest species
  • Black pepper climbing the shade trees
  • Cardamom and arecanut in mixed farms

This agroforestry system supports biodiversity while producing distinctive coffee.

Varieties and cup profile

Both Arabica and Robusta are cultivated in Sakleshpur. Arabica generally grows in the cooler higher elevations, while robusta thrives in warmer valleys with heavier rainfall.

Typical cup characteristics include:

  • Medium body
  • Balanced acidity
  • Notes of chocolate, nuts and mild spice

Sakleshpur’s modern coffee identity

Today, Sakleshpur is associated with:

  • Shade-grown Western Ghats coffee
  • Intercropping with pepper and spices
  • Rainforest biodiversity and estate landscapes
  • Growing interest in specialty Indian coffee

For Indian Kaapi, Sakleshpur represents the lush heart of Karnataka’s coffee belt, where forest ecology and plantation agriculture meet.
