How coffee reached Nelliyampathy

Coffee came to Nelliyampathy during the 19th century as plantation crops spread through the Western Ghats under colonial rule. The hills were developed for a mix of estate agriculture, and coffee found a place in the region’s cooler slopes together with tea, spices and orchard crops.

Unlike larger and more widely recognised coffee districts such as Wayanad, Nelliyampathy developed as a quieter hill origin with a more mixed agricultural identity.
