Koraput
Koraput: Tribal Arabica from Odisha’s Eastern Ghats
Koraput, in the highlands of southern Odisha, is one of India’s newer and most promising coffee origins. Forested uplands, moderate elevations and tribal smallholder farming have helped shape a coffee identity very different from the older estate belts of Karnataka and Kerala.
How coffee came to Koraput
Coffee reached Koraput relatively late, expanding mainly in the late 20th century through development programmes that encouraged cultivation in tribal areas of the Eastern Ghats. Rather than growing out of a classic colonial estate system, Koraput coffee developed through organised support for small farmers in upland villages.
Over time, these scattered plantings began to form a recognisable coffee belt, giving Odisha a place on India’s coffee map.
Tribal smallholders and agroforestry
Koraput coffee is closely tied to Adivasi smallholders, who grow coffee on small plots often integrated with food crops, fruit trees and forest cover. The farming landscape is typically more mosaic-like than estate-based, with coffee fitting into broader village livelihoods.
Common characteristics include:
- Smallholder plots rather than large plantation estates
- Shade-grown coffee mixed with fruit and forest trees
- Strong links between coffee cultivation and rural livelihood development
This gives Koraput an identity rooted in upland farming communities rather than plantation hierarchy.
Varieties and cup profile
Koraput is mainly associated with Arabica, especially in cooler upland zones where shade and elevation help produce a cleaner and more delicate cup.
Coffees from the region are often described as:
- Light to medium body
- Bright, gentle acidity
- Notes of cocoa, citrus, soft florals and mild red fruit
Koraput’s modern coffee identity
Today, Koraput is associated with:
- Eastern Ghats Arabica from Odisha
- Tribal smallholder production rather than estate coffee
- Shade-grown farming tied to livelihood development
- A newer Indian origin with growing specialty interest
For Indian Kaapi, Koraput adds an important eastern counterpart to origins like Araku: a newer coffee landscape where smallholder farming, upland ecology and regional development come together.
