Anamalai Hills
Anamalai Hills (Valparai): Rainforest Coffee of the Southern Western Ghats
The Anamalai Hills around Valparai, on the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border, form one of the most dramatic coffee landscapes in South India. Heavy monsoon rainfall, steep forested slopes and rich biodiversity make this a distinctive Western Ghats origin where coffee is shaped as much by rainforest ecology as by plantation history.
How coffee spread to the Anamalais
Coffee entered the Anamalai Hills during the 19th century as plantation agriculture expanded across the southern Western Ghats. British planters established estates in these elevated hills, drawn by cool temperatures, fertile soils and reliable rain.
Although tea later became highly visible in parts of Valparai, coffee continued to be cultivated in shaded estate sections and mixed plantation systems, especially where conditions favoured a slower-ripening cup.
Landscape, shade and wildlife
Coffee in the Anamalais is typically grown under shade in landscapes that sit close to rainforest fragments, streams and wildlife corridors. On many farms, you’ll find:
- Silver oak and native shade trees
- Pepper and cardamom intercropped with coffee
- A plantation mosaic shared with tea, forest and grassland edges
This gives the region a strong ecological identity. Coffee here is part of a wider living landscape known for rainforest biodiversity and shaded farming systems.
Varieties and cup profile
Both Arabica and Robusta are grown in the Anamalai Hills, depending on elevation and rainfall. Arabica performs well in cooler higher pockets, while robusta is better suited to wetter and slightly lower zones.
Typical cup characteristics include:
- Medium to full body
- Low to medium acidity
- Notes of cocoa, dark sugar, spice and mild tropical fruit
The modern identity
Today, the Anamalai Hills are associated with:
- Shade-grown coffee in the southern Western Ghats
- Plantation landscapes linked to Valparai and the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border
- Coffee intercropped with pepper and other spices
- A biodiversity-rich rainforest setting that shapes the farming environment
For Indian Kaapi, the Anamalais represent a strong addition to the origins map: a southern rainforest coffee region where plantation history, mountain agriculture and forest ecology overlap.
